A Season In Hell

Die politische Lage in Frankreich ist nicht erst seit den sog Gelbwestenprotesten höchst angespannt. Seit vielen Jahren verfügen rechtsradikale Kräfte wie etwa der ehemalige Front National – heute Rassemblement National – über einen bedrückend hohen Zuspruch. Das traditionelle Parteiensystem ist weitgehend zusammengebrochen, Präsident Macron konnte mit seiner Bewegung La République en Marche zunächst von dieser krisenhaften Entwicklung profitieren. Doch die Lage bleibt unübersichtlich und auch unsicher.

Französisches politisches Denken und Handeln, die politischen Institutionen und Traditionen des Landes sind für ausländische Beobachter/innen gelegentlich schwer zu verstehen, gleichzeitig ist französische Politik auch für die weitere Entwicklung Europas und der EU von hoher Bedeutung. Zunächst bis zur vorgesehenen Präsidentschaftswahl im Jahr 2022 möchten wir mit der Serie „A season in hell“ dazu beitragen, die entscheidenden Fragen der Politik im Lande zu beleuchten und zu erläutern. Im Europa des 21. Jahrhunderts – das ist unsere Überzeugung – gibt es keine rein nationale Politik mehr. Das wechselseitige Verständnis der politischen Entwicklung über Landesgrenzen hinaus ist auch und ganz besonderes für die politische Linke eine große und wichtige Herausforderung.

Der Titel der Serie geht auf Arthur Rimbauds poetisches Meisterwerk „Une Saison en Enfer“, eben „Eine Zeit in der Hölle“ zurück.

Nearly 150 years after French poet Arthur Rimbaud’s masterwork, contemporary France is roiled by its own Season in Hell, an unsettled political moment in which dark phantasms grow large.

The recent yellow vest protests brought tensions in French society to a boil, but beneath the surface the temperature has been rising for some time. The extreme right grows ever more powerful, largely through Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National. Meanwhile, the traditional party system has collapsed, leaving only Le Pen in the centre ring with Emmanuel Macron, who was gifted the presidency by a majority still unwilling to vote for an outright racist.

But with Macron’s approval ratings mired in the low-thirties – and the left mired in its own swamp of internal strife and strategic indecision – the shadow of the far-right continues to grow more menacing. Perhaps the only note of optimism, could it be considered one, is that this political crisis remains unresolved. There remains a struggle to be won.

Ensconced in a long and often self-referential history, buried beneath the unrivalled executive powers granted by the Fifth Republic, France’s politics and its institutions can be hard to understand for foreign observers. At the same time, French policy is of great importance to Europe, the EU and indeed the broader international arena.

Between now and the 2022 presidential elections, we plan to contribute to the political debate with “A Season in Hell”, a series of articles through which we will shed light on the decisive questions of the moment. In today’s Europe, there no longer remains a purely national politics. The mutual understanding of political developments beyond national borders is a crucial task of our time, particularly for the left. It is here that we intend to make our mark.

Près de 150 ans après le chef-d’œuvre du poète français Arthur Rimbaud, la France contemporaine est agitée par sa propre saison en enfer, traversant une période politique profondément instable, qui laisse la part belle aux fantasmes sombres.

Les récentes manifestations des gilets jaunes ont porté à ébullition les tensions dans la société française, mais sous la surface, la température montait depuis un temps. L’extrême droite devient de plus en plus puissante, surtout sous la forme du Rassemblement National de Marine Le Pen. En même temps, le système partisan traditionnel s’effondre, et Le Pen reste seule dans le ring avec Emmanuel Macron, à qui la présidence a été offerte par une majorité toujours pas prête à voter pour une personne ouvertement raciste.

Mais avec la cote de satisfaction de Macron coincée juste au-dessus de trente pourcent – et la gauche coincée dans son propre marais de conflit interne et d’indécision stratégique – l’ombre de l’extrême droite devient de plus en plus menaçante. La seule note d’optimisme, si l’on peut dire, est que la crise politique n’étant pas encore résolue, la messe n’est pas dite.

Bien installées dans une histoire longue et souvent autoréférentielle, enterrées sous les gros pouvoirs exécutifs du Ve République, les politiques et institutions françaises peuvent être difficiles à comprendre pour les observatrices et observateurs étranger.es. En même temps, la politique française est d’une grande importance pour l’Europe, l’UE et même l’arène internationale.

Entre maintenant et les élections présidentielles de 2022, nous avons l’intention de contribuer au débat politique avec « Une saison en enfer », une série d’articles à travers laquelle nous chercherons à éclairer les enjeux décisifs du moment. Dans l’Europe d’aujourd’hui, il ne reste plus de politique purement nationale. La compréhension mutuelle des politiques au-delà des frontières nationales est une tâche clé pour la période, surtout à gauche. Ce sera là notre contribution.
